Meet the Course Creator and Certified Service Dog Trainer

Meet Sabrina Clark, a certified service dog trainer whose extensive twenty-year+ career is rooted in a deep-seated passion for canine behavior and service dog education. Sabrina’s dog training journey began in childhood at nine years old and flourished into a vocation as she founded her own dog training business at just seventeen.

Sabrina Clark has earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Zoology with a double major in Psychology. Psychology focuses on behavior and Zoology focuses on ethology and evolution. Her education gave her a broad perspective on the application and limitations of science allowing her to stand out against other service dog trainers.

After spending decades as a dog trainer, Sabrina has identified the conflicts and shortcomings between ethologists and behaviorists and has created a training curriculum that incorporates these considerations.

Her dog training philosophy transcends traditional training methods, focusing on communication and mutual respect, aiming to build a bridge between dogs and owners that is founded on trust and understanding. As the creator of Balanced Obedience’s online service dog training program, Sabrina is dedicated to helping dog owners establish and nurture strong, lasting bonds with their service dogs.

As an inactive attorney, she created this service dog training program that ensures dog owners meet the State and Federal regulations for service animals.

Who this Online Training is For

Our service dog training program is for dog owners who want to train their own well-mannered dog to become a certified service dog that passes the public access test.  Passing the public access test is the standard to measure if you and your dog are well-behaved in public. Included with the online course are unlimited Public Access Tests across the United States, to ensure you and your dogs meet the standards set out by the ADA and NSAR.

This course is perfect for:

  • Owners who have a dog that is proficient with the obedience commands: heel, sit, down, stay, come, and leave-it commands.
  • Dog owners who have an emotional support dog and want to transition them into being service dog.
  • Individuals with a disability that need a service dog to complete tasks because of their impairment.
  • Owners who rather train their own service dogs online than work with in-person trainers.

Online Service Dog Training Is NOT For

  • Dogs who lack manners and a solid foundation in obedience training.
  • Dogs that display aggressive behavior (growling, biting, raising hackles, showing teeth, etc.)
  • Puppies who are younger than 14 weeks old

If your dog exhibits any of these behaviors, enroll in the Doggie Bootcamp course prior to enrolling in our service dog training. If your puppy is between 6-16 weeks old, your puppy could significantly benefit from our online puppy training course (Puppy Makeover Program). This course is not intended to teach your dog to become a therapy dog. For other specialty training, contact us.

This course is not designed for Service Dog training for the hearing or sight impaired.

The NSAR Public Access Test for Service Animal

To become a Service Dog, your dog should be able to pass the Public Access Test. The NSAR Public Access Test is designed to ensure that service dogs are stable, well-behaved, and unobtrusive in public spaces. This test is vital for maintaining public safety and comfort, ensuring that service dogs act appropriately in various environments. Aggressive or unmanageable behavior in service dogs leads to disqualification, emphasizing the need for proper training and control.

Service Animal Requirements of the Public Access Test

The Public Access Test includes several specific requirements:

  • Controlled Unload and Entry: The service dog must exit a vehicle calmly and enter buildings without seeking attention or straying.
  • Heeling Through Buildings: The dog should walk close to the handler, adjusting to speed changes and avoiding distractions.
  • Six-Foot Recall on Lead: The dog must respond promptly to a recall command without getting distracted.
  • Sits and Downs on Command: The dog must obey sit and down commands without being distracted, even by food or external stimuli.
  • Noise Distraction: The service dog should not show aggression or excessive fear in response to noises.
  • Restaurant Behavior: In dining settings, the service dog must remain unobtrusive, either under the table or close to the handler.

Each component of this test is designed to assess the dog’s ability to behave appropriately in a range of public scenarios.
